My life wasn't always centered around my one-of-a-kind mistress, Celestia Rainbow. I was born into a world that wasn't so fond of a phoenix-harpy hybrid like myself.

  * * *

Regardless of the hate my own kind bestowed upon me, my family did their best to love me, no matter how different I was. But being different comes with challenges and heartbreak as my loving family is slaughtered and I'm left with nowhere to call home.

  * * *

Thanks to a little girl who didn't judge me by my cover, my new life begins, a life where I'm loved for the little creature I am within. Fifteen years later, I'm now by my mistress' side, ready to watch her prove her worth.

  * * *

I didn't know I, too, would get my chance to shine, but you never know what the future has in store-especially when the future delivers me six men of my own.

My name is Arielle Rainbow and this is my story of how love came knocking on my door...quite literally.

  "ARIELLE!"

My body plunged into the thick burning liquid, and I fought to hold my breath. The sound of my Mistress' shrill scream sent a wave of fear through me.

I didn't worry about my impending death as I sank deeper into the blazing hot water that felt like diluted tar. I was frightened of how my death would affect my Mistress.

Celestia Rainbow was her name. She'd been my savior, my friend, and a better mother than my own had ever been to me. Did I pity the life I had lived prior to meeting my Mistress?

  Originally, no.

Yet, as I continued to sink deeper into the pool known as Familiar Wasteland, all I could feel was regret.

I wished I'd done better to prove my worth to my family.

I longed to hear my mother's lullabies and listen to my sibling’s bickering.

My eyes wished to see the flock of us soaring through the sky at sunset, searching for a new nest to call home.

I longed to prove to my father and siblings that, though I was different, I could be as good as or even better than the average male phoenix shifter.

The desire to show everyone else that being different wasn't a curse coursed through my very soul. I lived a dual life, one of a phoenix and the other as a harpy; each had their benefits and their downsides.

Countless examples of what I wished I could have done differently flowed into my mind from my pitiful past, and as my body slowly shifted back to my little phoenix form, I thought about Celestia.

She'd loved me. Not because of my power or magical strength. Those beautiful big childlike eyes locked onto my injured body, not with anger or disgust, but with happiness. Upon her face was pure excitement to have found a little, broken shifter like me, covered in mud, blood, and dirt as rain poured on the both of us.

Instead of being treated like a piece of trash, I was picked up from the soaked ground like a precious treasure. Celestia’s mismatched eyes twinkled with love, and the bright smile of her heart-shaped pink lips brought tears to my eyes. She'd taken me from the cold, harsh world of a phoenix harpy shifter, and brought me into the warm little comfort of her bedroom, working every day to help me heal.

Celestia saved me from myself and the demons that clung to my mind. Getting to know her made me realize we were just the same. Different bodies and shifters, but what the world gave us, again and again, was the same.

Maybe that was why we got along. I didn't know for sure. Either way, her presence in my life changed everything, and now that I was sinking to my death, I acknowledged how much I'd miss her. How much I loved every part of being with her.

Whether it was the happy times with us eating at the dinner table as a family, or the sad times when Celestia was sick and I would do my best to keep her warm as she cried herself to sleep, we would be there for
each other. That was how I learned to love.

It wasn't long before I ran out of oxygen and the thick burning liquid that scarred my feathers made its way through my nostrils and into my mouth, doing its job to fill me with its toxic waste and add my carcass to the list of familiars that had died in here.

A prank went wrong. A fight that wasn't my own led to this moment, but as my consciousness began to fade, I knew for the sake of those men I would do it again.

I'd only experienced what love was for my Mistress, who chose to keep me by her side. I had never known what love was from the opposite sex, and I'd finally begun to see the difference. Love was love. That never changed, but experiencing love from a group of strangers who weren't obligated to spend time with you, laugh and cry with you, or work together to ensure the people you cared dearly for felt better, made me understand why Celestia loved her men.

It made me realize just how amazing loving someone could be and how much I wished I'd fought harder to savor the moments I’d had with each of the mysterious, powerful, and uniquely created familiars.

I yearned for enough time to love them all once more. At least the second time around, I would walk towards the unknown challenges of love.

I'd sprint towards it, in hopes of having even more time to spend with them, because dying with regrets that could have been solved while alive, was more painful to my dying soul than anything else I could think of.

  "She's a hybrid."

Hybrids: a combination of two different breeds. Sometimes it's random, other times it’s planned. Either way, the simple term made me sad.

Maybe it was the way Father and Mother tilted their heads in confusion at the elder phoenix before us. Or perhaps it was the way Mother’s eyes filled with tears and the worry that shone in Father's eyes as he looked at me.

Father was one of the strongest phoenix familiars I'd ever known, and he never showed fear in front of my older brothers and me, but as I sat alone in the corner of the nest hut, I could see his concern, sadness, and utmost fear for me.

"How can we protect her?" Father asked.

"Her harpy side won't show for a while, but I'm uncertain as to when it will reveal itself. Both of you are strong and powerful, and we've seen from your sons that they were early bloomers. You can protect her by ensuring one of you or your sons will always be with her. You know very well we don't handle hybrids well. She does not deserve a premature death over the fear of her strength when she reaches maturity." Elder phoenix clasped his hands together and gave me a pitying glance.

Mother’s face scrunched in concern. "She's my only girl. I won't allow them to hurt her."

"My dear, we'll protect her. No harm will come to her," Father reassured her, nuzzling his head against hers.

"We'll be moving over to the next phoenix village in a few weeks. I guarantee they have a few hybrids. If possible, I'd like your family to come along. I know you may not want to move from this nest, especially with the friends and bonds you've created, but..." Elder trailed off, his eyes studying me.

Mother and Father followed his gaze, which only made me more anxious. I hopped to the very corner and nestled myself against the warm wall of hay and looked away, not wanting to continue being here.

I wanted to go back to our nest and play with my brothers, not sit here talking about scary things.

"For the sake of your daughter, that's the only thing that can be done," Elder concluded.

"Thank you Elder. We'll think about it and come back with an answer before the migration to the next village," Father assured him.

"Bru..." I mumbled, trying to make myself as small as possible. Move? We have to go away?

  "Arielle."

I opened my eyes slightly to see Mother standing before me. She lowered her face to nuzzle against my feathered cheek, the motion giving me a little bit of comfort.

"Arielle, don't worry. You aren't in trouble," Mother reassured me.

"Bru..." I mumbled, not wanting to join the conversation.

"I think she misses her brothers. You know they always make her feel better when she's not in a happy mood. Let's go home," Father suggested.

"Let's go, Arielle. You'll ride on Mommy's back." Mother nudged me with a wing.

I didn't reply, getting up and hopping to the door before I fluttered my pink and blue feathers. They were nothing like Mother's and Father's unique red, orange, and gold feathers. Why was I the different one?

"Let me know as soon as you've made a decision," Elder instructed.

"Yes. We'll be off. Have a pleasant night, Elder." Father watched Mother and me leave the nest structure and move onto the platform.

The chilly night breeze greeted us, fluttering my feathers and making me shiver. I was still learning how to ignite my flames, which only lasted a little longer than a minute so far.

Mother spread her wings, those marvelous feathers igniting into flames that flowed down her body. She flapped her wings a few times before she launched into the air, stretching them out as she flew around before circling back to where I stood on the platform.

"Let's go, Arielle." She patiently waited for me to hop on.

I didn't budge, wishing I could fly on my own. I didn't understand everything they discussed, but I knew something about me was wrong and we had to move because of it.

  "Arielle."

I lifted my head to see my Father's wise amber eyes. He lowered his head to press his forehead against mine in a comforting manner. "Do not worry. We will teach you how to fly in the coming weeks. Don't be upset."

  "Moving," I stated.

"It's a maybe, Arielle. We may not need to go anywhere. Let's see how the weeks go, and we can make a decision then," Father assured me.

"Bru," I replied, but decided I wanted to go home. At least our nest was warm, and I'd get to play with my brothers. Father moved back to let me hop onto Mother's back before he outstretched his wings and they ignited into flames.

He jumped off the platform, diving down before he rose up to glide on the winds.

"Hold on, Ari," Mother encouraged. I made sure my talons were securely holding her, and she followed Father's lead, diving down and then using the wind to glide as we made our way home.

Our nest wasn't far from the Elder Phoenix's home. Due to my parent's strength, we were positioned closer to the Elder's home in case of an emergency that required their assistance and power. Being phoenix familiars was risky, or that's what Mother said.

We were one of the few sought out by mages or hunters who wanted to sell us in different dimensions. I had to be more careful, according to Father. I didn't know the details, but I'd once overheard Mother call me a Blessed One when speaking to my brothers.

I didn't have the courage to confront them about what I was yet, but with the possibility of moving because of me, maybe it was important to know what was so special about me.

In less than five minutes we were home. My mother landed first, allowing me to get down and onto the platform before her flames diminished. Father followed suit and looked to Mother who then gazed at me.

"Arielle, go inside. Father and I are going to talk a little." Mother motioned towards the nest.

"Tuck in?" I asked. I always slept the best when Mother tucked me in. She'd nestle next to me and hum nice songs that always helped me to drift off. I never slept well without her doing those bedtime routines.

"Yes. I'll be back in time to tuck you in. You can play with your brothers for a little bit. Father and I won't be gone long. I promise," Mother reassured me.

"Bru," I replied, moving to the wooden door. I didn't reach the doorbell before the door opened, my older brother at the doorway.

"You guys are back? Hey, Arielle. Hmm, why do you look so down?"

"We're going for a fly, Aaron. Can you make sure you keep your sister entertained? We won't be long," Father suggested.

"Sure." Aaron watched me hop into our cozy home before he closed the door after saying farewell to our parents.

p; "What's up with sis? She's not all energetic and trying to burn everything."

I glanced at my other brother, Alec, who had a confused expression on his feathered face. I didn't even reply, going into the corner where my favorite shiny button was. Our nest was big enough to fit all of us and give us our own sleeping space, but Mother and Father gave me a bigger spot for all the different toys I liked to keep around for snuggling.

After I sat down and nestled against my button, I began to whimper, wishing I could go away.

"Arielle? Aaron, Ari is crying." Alec fluttered his wings in urgency. Aaron flew over to land next to me, outstretching his wing to pet my head soothingly.

"What's the matter, Ari? Did you get in trouble or something?" he asked. I shook my head, moving a bit so I could nudge my head against Aaron's body.
